Should I take this class?

Who are you and what do you have to teach me?

In that question is another question, which is: Why am I teaching a class? So I’ll answer the second question first and say: I believe I’m here to teach and to learn with other people in art. I strive to create spaces of mutual respect, humility, and bravery, and to let the work do the talking. And here’s some concrete stuff about who I am:

I’m a conservatory trained actor, director and voice coach (Brown/Trinity Rep MFA), who has directed and produced shows in New York (yo, Garret), St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, and good ole Providence, RI. I’m also an accomplished actor, and I’ve performed in all of those places, too. I’ve trained in Shakespeare, “Realism,” Michael Chekhov, Devising, Masque, Improvisation, and lots of other stuff...but what I really strive to teach is how to find your voice as an artist.

If Henri Matisse tried to paint like his teachers, we’d have missed out on some righteous stuff. That’s what I think about all art—including acting. There are technical considerations that must be learned before you can divine a truly free performance (and I know about those too), but what really must be learned is how to trust your instrument’s beautiful intuition. That’s what I help you to do, and I have loads of fun doing it. And that’s why this class would be mutually beneficial for us.

Here’s what people say about me as a teacher:

“More than any teacher I've worked with, Jack adapts masterfully to his actors' style and needs, meeting artists wherever they may be in their creative journey, lifting them to new heights with a deft balance of rigor and kindness.”

“When I consider Jack as a teacher, two qualities come to mind: his facility with craft, and his gentleness with people. Few have done more for me to nurture my art in its early stages. Jack is an artist in the truest sense.”

In addition to being a fantastic actor in his own right, Jack is a passionate, intelligent, and playful acting coach. When I've worked with him on monologues, he has balanced extensive knowledge and experience with simple, playable direction. And I've always left with a smile on my face."

Jack excels at focusing on you as a human first and helping utilize wherever you're at to get where you need to go.”

“I loved seeing Jack watch a scene and take it to the best next step. In acting there can be so many avenues a piece can take but I loved being surprised at what Jack could bring out in an actor. He really helps you find the things within you that you maybe didn't know were ready to speak through the voice of the material.”

“Jack is a fabulous teacher and director. He meets people where they are, matching his teaching style and feedback to their skill set, experience, and goals. He has a deep understanding of human emotion, allowing him to understand a character and an actor and help them find each other.”
